Special Guests and Seminars

The Boreales Production Company

Frederic Fougea and his team at Boreales have produced a wildly popular series of films entitled Lord of the Animals. Focusing on the unusual relationships between man and animals, this series captures some of the most subtle interactions between species.

Catherine Destivelle

A favorite of filmmakers, Destivelle has appeared in the work of many Banff festival finalists over the years. Her climbing career--she is now fully recovered from a debilitating fall several years ago--bridges all aspects of the sport, from ice climbing and huge walls, to the major peaks of the world.

Alex Lowe

His climbing résumé is substantial, including two trips to the top of Mount Everest, numerous new routes on major peaks around the globe, and his solo climb of the Matterhorn's north face. Lowe also won the speed-ascent competition on Russia's 23,000-foot Khan-Tengri in Russia.

Whose Risk Is It?

Saturday, November 2, 1996 12:30 - 1:45 p.m. Max Bell Auditorium

Lost in the backcountry? Trapped in an avalanche? The issue of risk in the wilderness--and where individual responsibility ultimately resides--is a sobering topic within the outdoor community. This issue is critically important to manufacturers, guides, clients, and resort operators.

Extreme Guiding

Sunday, November 3, 1996 12:30 - 1:45 p.m., Max Bell Auditorium

The tragic year on Mount Everest has caused the climbing community to pause and reflect on the merits and perils of leading paying customers into the rarified atmosphere atop the highest peaks in the world. This seminar brought together representatives from all sides of the relationship to ponder the future of this business.
